The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has rejected the 2027 general election timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), citing a clash with the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

INEC announced on Friday, 13 February 2026, that presidential and National Assembly elections would be held on 20 February 2027, while governorship and State Assembly polls are scheduled for 6 March 2027. The announcement was made at a press conference in Abuja by INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan.

In a statement issued on Saturday, 14 February 2026, MURIC’s Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, said the election dates fall within the projected Ramadan period, expected to begin around 8 February and end about 10 March 2027.

According to the group, conducting elections during Ramadan would pose challenges for Muslim voters, electoral officials, observers and security personnel who would be observing the fast.

MURIC described the timetable as “exclusive” and “insensitive” to Muslim concerns, arguing that the scheduling could lead to voter inconvenience and reduced participation among Muslim communities.

The organisation also questioned whether adequate consultation took place before the timetable was finalised, particularly regarding major religious events in the country.

MURIC urged INEC to review the election schedule to avoid coinciding with Ramadan and called for greater inclusivity in national planning.

INEC has not issued an official response to the group’s statement as of the time of filing this report.
